Apodytes dimidiata – White pear – Witpeer- Umdakane

The white pear (Apodytes dimidiata) is an evergreen tree perfectly suited for coastal and windy environments. It can grow up to 25m tall with an open spreading crown, making it an excellent choice for providing shade and shelter. Its distribution stretches from Ethiopia in the North to the Western Cape in the South, growing in various habitats ranging from montane forests to wooded grasslands. In South Africa, it is a protected tree, recognized for its ecological importance.

The glossy dark green leaves of Apodytes dimidiata are simple and alternate, creating a lush canopy. The trunk is pale grey or whitish, rather smooth, and has large grey, brown, or orange patches, often accompanied by horizontal markings. The pale grey trunk adds to the tree’s aesthetic appeal, giving it a unique and attractive appearance. During the flowering season, which lasts from September to April, the tree produces sweetly scented blooms reminiscent of fresh coconut, filling the air with a delightful fragrance. Various bird species are attracted to the tree to feed on its red fleshy fruits, which ripen from December to June.

The White pear prefers well-drained, compost-rich soil. It is adaptable to both full sun and semi-shade conditions, making it versatile for different garden settings. While the tree is frost-tolerant, young trees are more susceptible to frost damage and require protection during colder months to ensure survival.

Apodytes dimidiata makes a beautiful screening plant when used as a hedge, offering privacy and a natural barrier. When planted as a specimen tree, it can be striking, particularly during its flowering or fruiting stages. The White pear also performs well when grown in a pot, it is a great option for smaller spaces or container gardens. Its non-invasive root system makes it well-suited for small gardens, paved areas, or near pools, as it will not damage surrounding structures. Additionally, this tree is known for its ability to attract pollinators, supporting local biodiversity.
