Quercus palustris – Pin oak

Grown for its attractive pyramidal shape and straight, dominant trunk, the Pin oak is a medium to large tree that has adapted well to the South African climatic conditions. This tree is native to eastern and central America.

The tree’s glossy green leaves are lobed, with 2 to 4 pairs of sharply serrated edges. In autumn, these leaves transform into a vibrant mix of bronze, red, and gold before eventually falling. The dead leaves sometimes remain hanging on the tree for a long time. This tree is monoecious; the non-showy flowers appear at approximately the same time as the new leaves develop in the spring. The yellow-green catkins are 12.7 – 17.78 cm long. The fruit is an acorn that matures at the end of the second growing season after flowering.

Reaching a height of 9 to 15 metres, Pin Oak is well-suited for avenue planting, parklands, and large residential gardens where shade and structure are key. Its dense canopy with a dominant central leader and spreading lower branches offers excellent shelter and shade.

This tree tolerates pollution, compacted soils, and a wide range of soil types, including clay and acidic soils. It requires minimal maintenance, with occasional pruning to maintain shape and deep watering during dry periods. The tree grows quickly and has a fairly shallow, non-invasive root system.
