Citrus aurantifolia – Citrus Lime

Citrus aurantifolia, commonly known as lime, is believed to have originated from a hybrid cross between Citrus papeda and Citrus medica. Limes are native to the Indo-Malayan region, where they grow wild in the valleys of the Himalayas. They are typically classified into sweet or bitter varieties, depending on the sugar content of the juice.

In South Africa, the most cultivated lime varieties are Bearss and Tahiti. The Bearss lime is thought to have originated in California from a seedling of the Tahiti variety. It was named after T.J. Bearss, the owner of the nursery where the seedling first developed. The exact origin of the Tahiti lime remains unknown, though it was introduced to California from Tahiti sometime between 1850 and 1880.

Citrus aurantifolia grows well in tropical and subtropical climates. Its flowers are highly attractive to honey bees, which feed on both the nectar and pollen, and occasionally collect honeydew excreted by aphids on the leaves. The aromatic blossoms also attract hummingbirds and butterflies, adding vibrancy and biodiversity to gardens.

The fruit is edible and widely used in cooking, as well as in the production of juices. When planted in rows, lime trees can form effective privacy hedges as they respond well to pruning. They also make excellent potted topiaries, providing an attractive accent to patios and courtyards.
