Sterculia murex – Lowveld Chestnut – Laeveld Kastaiing – Mohlatsane

Sterculia murex is a fascinating tree with unique fruits. This tree grows naturally on the hills near the Pretorius Kop entrance to Kruger Park. It is found in a limited number of areas in Mpumalanga, most often on wooded rocky hills, and also in Swaziland. The tree reaches a mature height of 6 to 12 meters.

This fairly hardy tree is mostly deciduous, characterized by a spreading growth form and thick, ribbed grey-brown bark. Its velvet palmately compound leaves consist of 5-10 stalkless leaflets radiating from a single point. The Lowveld chestnut tree flowers in sprays at the ends of the usually bare branches from August to October. The waxy yellow flowers, shaped like shallow cups, are known to attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, playing a vital role in local ecosystems. The blooms are followed by very large, spiky, lobed capsules filled with numerous seeds embedded in stinging hairs. When mature, the capsules split on one side, revealing large (25 mm long) black seeds that are rich in oil. The roasted seeds are sometimes enjoyed as a delicacy in local communities, showcasing the tree’s value beyond its ornamental appeal.

Lowveld chestnut is slightly frost-sensitive and has moderate water requirements. It makes a beautiful specimen tree in gardens. The roots are not aggressive, making the tree suitable for container planting. Sterculia murex provides essential food and habitat for wildlife, contributing to biodiversity in its native regions. In some cultures, parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine, adding to its significance in local practices.
