Gonioma kamassi is a fairly hardy evergreen shrub or small tree known for its straight, slender stem. This tree reaches a mature height of 2 to 8 meters depending on local growing conditions. It is predominantly found in the eastern regions of the Western Cape (notably in the Knysna forests), as well as in the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal. Scattered populations also exist in the afromontane forests of Swaziland, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.
The leaves of Gonioma kamassi are opposite, leathery, and display a glossy dark green colour on the upper surface, with a paler hue beneath. The tree produces highly fragrant, yellowish-white flowers, which bloom in compact terminal clusters at the ends of the branches throughout the year. The fruit consists of paired, woody capsules that stand erect on the twigs; they split open while still attached to the plant, releasing numerous papery-winged seeds.
The genus name Gonioma is derived from the Greek word gonia, meaning ‘angle,’ The species name kamassi comes from the Khoisan language, reflecting its indigenous roots. This tree is well-suited for planting in shaded or semi-shaded areas and prefers compost-rich soils. Gonioma kamassi is an excellent choice for a shade tree in small gardens and is also ideal for creating tall hedges.
