Liquidambar styraciflua – Liquidambar – Sweetgum

Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as Sweetgum, is a deciduous tree native to North America. This tree is well known for its brilliant autumn foliage which makes it a standout feature in residential gardens, public parks, and along streets in towns and cities. It is widely cultivated all over the world especially in temperate regions. In South Africa, the Sweetgum is popular in regions with cooler climates and distinct seasonal changes, such as the Highveld, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and parts of the Western Cape.

The Sweetgum is easily identified by its palmately lobed, star-shaped leaves with toothed margins. This medium to large tree can reach up to 20 metres in height, with a trunk diameter of up to 2 metres. The bark is light brown, often tinged with red or grey and marked with dark streaks. As the tree matures, the bark becomes deeply fissured with scaly ridges. During spring and summer, the foliage is a rich, glossy green. As autumn approaches, the leaves turn into shades of red, orange, and purple.

The Sweetgum is a fast-growing and frost hardy. It flowers from September to October producing pale green flowers that develop into hard, spiky seed pods. These seed balls can be a nuisance when they drop, as they are sharp and difficult to clear.

It is commonly used as a specimen tree, in avenue plantings, and as a shade provider in large gardens, estates, and public spaces. However, due to its aggressive root system, it is not suitable for small gardens or for planting near buildings, paved surfaces, or underground utilities. Additionally, the Sweetgum contributes to soil improvement by fixing nitrogen.
