Syzygium gerrardii – Forest Waterberry – Boswaterhout – Gihlu

Endemic to Southern Africa, Syzygium gerrardii is a fast-growing, medium-sized, evergreen tree with bright green, glossy leaves. It is commonly found in various habitats across the region. These include forests, woodlands, and along watercourses such as rivers and streams. While not widely recognized in South Africa’s landscaping industry, it is an excellent choice for water-logged soils. Although it typically reaches a mature height of 10-20m in its natural habitat, it tends to be smaller in gardens. This tree is slightly frost-sensitive, gardeners in frost-prone regions should take precautions to protect young plants during colder months.

The tree has a spreading canopy with glossy, dark green leaves that are elliptical or lance-shaped. The bark is smooth and grey-brown when young, becoming rough and fissured with age. Newly grown leaves have a red tint, making the tree stand out. Syzygium gerrardii bears lovely clusters of tiny white flowers during late winter and spring between July and October. Various insects, including bees, butterflies, and beetles, visit the fragrant flowers, seeking nectar and pollen.

The edible fruits are usually dark purple when mature, with a single rounded seed. While not listed as globally threatened, habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, urbanization, and agricultural expansion threaten Syzygium gerrardii populations in Southern Africa. Conservation efforts may be needed to protect this species and its habitats.

Syzygium gerrardii shares its relatives’ ability to endure various environmental conditions, making it resilient against wind and well-suited to clay soil. In a garden setting, the Forest waterberry can create a focal point. Its dense foliage also makes it ideal for hedging or screening, providing privacy and blocking unwanted views. Moreover, it responds well to pruning and shaping, allowing it to be trained into various shapes and sizes to suit different landscaping preferences.
